An independent clause is a group of words that contain a subject and verb,
and can stand on its own. However, when combining a dependent clause with an independent clause a comma may or may not be needed, depending upon where the dependent clause falls.

Examples

1. The beggar went from person to person begging.

2. Dinner was great.

3. Walking home was exciting.

4. The suspect had an alibi.

Let’s put the two together.

Color Legend:  Dependent – Independent

1. On the other hand, dinner was great.

2. Usually, the beggar went from person to person begging.

3. You will not pass the class, unless you do your homework.

4. Walking home was exciting, watching the beggar go from person to person begging.

An independent clause is a clause when connected by a conjunction or dependent clause. When it is not connected, it is known as a complete sentence.
